My Story

My name is Veena Gupta and I am the founder of Seam Group Services, a leading security services firm based in India. I am often referred to as Lady Bodyguard or Dabang Singh by my colleagues and clients, but I am proud to be a trendsetter in the industry.
When I was young, I wanted to join the police force, but my height and family constraints stood in my way. Instead, I pursued a degree in hospitality management and worked my way up the corporate ladder in five-star hotels. After I got married and had a daughter, I decided to look for a 9-to-5 job, and stumbled upon an opening for a business development manager in a security services firm.
At the interview, I was asked if I would be able to protect people, and I jumped at the idea. This was my passion since childhood, and it was the beginning of my journey into the security and protection business. I underwent rigorous training in Bangkok to learn the nuts and bolts of the industry, and when the company shut down operations in 2008, I started working on freelancing assignments. During this period, I faced a lot of discrimination because of my feminine appearance and my preference for wearing sarees to work. People questioned how a woman could protect them. But I believe that being a corporate protection officer or a security officer doesn’t just entail being physically strong. You also need a strong sense of intelligence and the ability to react to situations. So, I learned martial arts, Krav Maga, karate, boxing, and fighting with a knife, a gun, or simply my hands. Over the years, I have catered to a long list of prestigious clients and handled special assignments, including executive protection for the Prince of Hungary and his wife during the wedding ceremony of Liz Hurley with Arun Nayyar in India. Seam Risk Solutions now has operations in all major cities in India, and I also train men and women to become security officers. Some of them receive training from me for free.
Despite spending many years in this field, the challenges remain the same. A male client may be satisfied with my work, but he may be reluctant to introduce me to others because our relationship may be misunderstood. People still question how a woman can protect a man. But I am determined to break the ceiling and encourage more women to take up employment in the security sector by providing them with the right training. Seam Group Services has other verticals like Women in Security (WIS) and My Security, My Responsibility (MSMR), and I am proud to have opened an office in Singapore. My aim is to go global and have a huge team of female protection officers. I prefer wearing a saree because it allows me to look like a manager, merge into the crowd, and keep my eyes on whom I am protecting. I am extremely comfortable in one and have even learned how to use it as a weapon.
My story shows that stereotypes can be shattered, and passion and determination can help one achieve their dreams. I am proud to be a trendsetter in the security services business and hope to inspire more women to break barriers and pursue their passions.
